Victory of the Horsmen of the Apocalypse
I know some people here in the US are relieved to know that Bush will remain in office. There are people who fear change, and people who think his 'just folks' style is genuine--and perhaps it is. But he is not a statesman, and we need one right now--not some good ol'boy.
The rest of the world looks on in dismay, I know. Another four years of the religious right in power, of a man with moral certitude drawing lines on the world map, declaring his 'axis of evil' and believing he has a mandate from Heaven and the People to continue in his mis-begotten campaign of terror. But the mandate is slim. If only 51% of the eligible voters actually voted, and he received 51% of that vote, then he was elected by, at most, 26% of the people he now represents. And whether he is on God's side or God is on his side, I don't know. I do think we have different gods.
I know I threatened to move to Canada if he was elected. But I won't. In a country so conflicted, so divided by its diversity, and so wilfully ignorant of its role as a citizen of the world, some of us, the true patriots, have to keep up the fight to maintain perspective and awareness, and speak Truth to Those in Power.
