Dilettante's Diary: the internal dialogue of a hedonist bluestocking.

I am a dilettante. I know quite a bit about a lot of things, but I don't know enough to be an expert on anything. I have a very sensual, hedonistic nature, but I am also a thinker, and I aim one day to be worthy of the label 'bluestocking', despite its pejorative connotations.

This is my journal, which, delightfully enough, doesn't have to go wherever I go, but is accessible from nearly everywhere I am.

Vice Presidential Debate.

So I watched the Veep debate tonight, thanks to Michael's reminder. Dick Cheney was very self-possessed. He looked and acted like a professional politician. He also looked very old next to John Edwards. John Edwards looked and acted like a regular guy who found himself on TV. Endearing and earnest, actually. He's not a career politician and it shows. It makes me trust him a lot more than Cheney. Cheney has been around too long, and so I see him as part of the problem and not part of the solution.

"More of the same", John Edwards repeated fairly often, and this mantra seemed to follow George Bush's "Its hard work" refrain. Sometimes maintaining the status quo is hard work, especially when your words and effort are simply building and maintaining a dam that will not hold water forever. More of the same is not what I want, in fact, the thought of more of the same frightens me. I'm ready for a change, ready for younger, more visionary men and women to see past currency and profit and loss and recognize the value of a life lived well, a life lived with dignity, adequate healthcare, and intact civil liberties.

I wish, on the question of higher taxes, that Mr Edwards had responsed by pointing out that it was more important to put more tax $$ into the hands of the people who need it, rather than $5k into the hands of those who don't. I really approved of the point that Bill Clinton made at the Democratic Convention, that being in that higher income bracket for the first time in his life put earned him a $5k tax cut, for no reason. Its not like he needed that money. I know a lot of single mothers for whom $5k a year would make a HUGE difference. Ah well.

Another month and we'll know. I hope that we've got a change in Administration coming. I really do.... or I might look into moving to B.C. We've a corporate office there, I think.

Lastly, I opened my bottle of Courviosier XO tonight. I've still not finished the splash I put in the snifter. Its delightful, smooth...it tastes so nice it seems a waste to swallow it. The finish is almost sweet, like an incredibly smooth and subtle Grand Marnier or similar spirit. It is a very nice reward. I made a good choice.
