Dilettante's Diary: the internal dialogue of a hedonist bluestocking.

I am a dilettante. I know quite a bit about a lot of things, but I don't know enough to be an expert on anything. I have a very sensual, hedonistic nature, but I am also a thinker, and I aim one day to be worthy of the label 'bluestocking', despite its pejorative connotations.

This is my journal, which, delightfully enough, doesn't have to go wherever I go, but is accessible from nearly everywhere I am.

This weekend in review

I'm exhausted. Whew. The three days in Seattle were a whirlwind.

I stopped at Ikea in Renton and picked up the smaller Expedit bookshelf. I'd wanted it in the black-brown but they didn't have the smaller size, so I got it in birch. I was really peeved that hte price was so marked up at Ikea verses what it was showing on the website. The bookshelf was $99 on the website, and $169 at the store.

Lori and I rented a car, since she didn't think hers was reliable enough for the long drive. I learned to get around in the area between Bellevue and Kent. Lori's friend lives in Bellevue and it is a good thing that I am not directionally-challenged or night-blind, because Friday night Lori and Brandi both got drunk and I was the designated driver.

Saturday I helped with decorating the Hall and hiding the other Laurie, who flew in from Reno for Brandi's 30th birthday. The bar had Courvoisier VSOP, which I enjoyed at around 8pm. The buffet was good, as well. Brandi's husband Scott does karaoke on the weekends, so the music was great, even if sometimes the singing wasn't.

At around 10pm Scott asked for volunteers to relieve him so he could spend some time with Brandi. I was the most sober volunteer, so I learned to use the equipment and look up the CDs and DVDs and after about 20 minutes, he left me to it. So I was a DeeJay for 4 hours. *laugh* I played over 30 requests. Afterwards I drove him home in his truck and he asked me if I wanted a job. He said he'd never seen anyone pick up on it so quick. I laughed at the irony, because I can't seem operate my own AV receiver at home, but I somehow managed to operate a 4-deck karaoke machine with two microphones and a rather complicated sound board, as well as keep all the music requests straight. I thanked him for the job offer, but declined. He was astonished to learn that until this weekend I'd never seen karaoke performed or operated before. Ok, so, I live under a rock ;)

It rained buckets all day Friday and Saturday, but today was absolutely gorgeous. The drive wasn't too bad, even with all the extra traffic to Castle Rock to see Mt Saint Helens. The air was so clear and clean, and on the drive down we could see to foliage starting to turn. When I got home I dozed in the sun for an hour, and then went inside to put the bookshelf together. Then I had one of those psychic-link moments where I knew Stephanie was trying to call me on my cell, so I found it in my luggange and turned it on. Sure enough, she'd called 5 minutes prior to me checking my messages. Wierd.
