Dilettante's Diary: the internal dialogue of a hedonist bluestocking.

I am a dilettante. I know quite a bit about a lot of things, but I don't know enough to be an expert on anything. I have a very sensual, hedonistic nature, but I am also a thinker, and I aim one day to be worthy of the label 'bluestocking', despite its pejorative connotations.

This is my journal, which, delightfully enough, doesn't have to go wherever I go, but is accessible from nearly everywhere I am.

seriously considering it

ok, so, I got those three solicitations when I was away from home. I answered two of them, and they wrote back. The editor gave some feedback and encouragement again. The fellow with the site, I've been emailing back and forth with. He wants to produce a CD with my bdsm audio stories and recordings, he;d also like me to do voice-overs. He's sent me a business proposal.

In the meantime, I've also been doing some research into the industry. I found a few, rare, tasteful sites, and sent emails out to the contacts, stating the following:
I am writing, not as a potential customer, but as a potential 'colleague'. I started publishing text and audio erotica on Literotica about 9 months ago. I've gotten quite a lot of positive feedback, particularly with regards to the audio stories. I've been approached by a couple of sites either asking if they can use my audio (for free of course) or asking if I would be willing to read stories for a nominal fee. This, of course, got me thinking about the possibility of actually making money at something that has been, until now, a very pleasurable hobby.

Would you be willing to open a dialogue about your experiences setting up shop in the 'porn' industry? I would like that very much.

And the responses, wow. Two more business proposals :) Its pretty amazing. Seems people who are interested in presenting quality erotica and pornography online are very collaborative and interesting people. One of the respondents is a woman who has been in the industry for over a decade. She's got some really interesting stuff coming up. We really hit it off and she's made me several offers depending on what I want to do and how actively I want to participate. She said there isn't as much money to be made in the erotic-quality-and-content sector as the smut, but, the niche is opening up, particularly as women are getting online more and exploring their sexuality vicariously, and that there is potential for making money there. Her sites produce enough income for her to live well. And the other person who propositioned me as a result of my email, he said he clears about $500 each month from this little hobby, and he knows there is potential for more growth.. he thinks partnering up with a female author and voice would broaden the base (his target audience is women) and bring in a lot more revenue.

Its exciting, actually, for two reasons. One, because I've been a bit frustrated creatively since I stopped coding the game, and I've been trying to decide what creative outlet to put more energy into that would give me a similar sense of accomplishment and feedback as I got there. The second reason it is exciting is that additional income would definately be welcome at this point in my life. And 'porn' websites are a decent recurring revenue model. I mean, you only write a story or record it once... but once you put it out there, people buy the access again and again, either streaming or downloading or CDs.

Its got some interesting possibilities and I've got some real thinking to do... especially about what friends and family would think about it... and then there is the possibility of my business associates finding out. I'd have to decide ahead of time how I would handle it...
