Dilettante's Diary: the internal dialogue of a hedonist bluestocking.

I am a dilettante. I know quite a bit about a lot of things, but I don't know enough to be an expert on anything. I have a very sensual, hedonistic nature, but I am also a thinker, and I aim one day to be worthy of the label 'bluestocking', despite its pejorative connotations.

This is my journal, which, delightfully enough, doesn't have to go wherever I go, but is accessible from nearly everywhere I am.

My Vote: I detest Bush more than Kerry.

As an American who experiences the benefits and drawbacks of our politcal system, I must say that our current political climate is terrifying. I am a registered Independant who detests the fact that our two-party winner-take-all system disenfranchises half of the population eligible to vote. I long for a parliamentary system in which political parties are represented proportionate to their share of the vote, requiring coalitions and compromise and cooperation between the politicians, rather than a greate divide between two political houses, both of which are nearly identical save a few polarizing ideological differences.

I detest the amount of money being spent on political advertisements, particularly the ones that bash their opponents.

I detest the Republican Party touting the horn of Family Values and the Nuclear Family and the need for a Defense of Marriage Act. What a crock of excrement. The hypocrisy in the Republican Party is repugnant to me. The Nuclear Family in America is a lot like the Nuclear Bomb--It is designed to explode. Family Values? Those are a luxury we cannot afford. Most Americans are now shopping at Walmart, and they don't offer Family Values on the shelves there. Defence of Marriage? Hello! There are thousands, even tens of thousands of children whose parents are, yes, homosexual. Many of them live with their gay parents. Many of those parents want to marry their partners, to be legally and socially accepted as married, but cannot, and so the family unit they have created is de-stabilized by the very political system which appears to hold Family Values in high esteem.

I detest the Democratic Party's attempt to woo everyone, to cajole everyone into believing they are the Party of the People and are thus all-inclusive. They are not. They need to find their fan-base and return to it. They need to appeal to Americans on a visceral level, just as the Republicans do. The Democratic Party needs to stop defining itself in relation to and in opposition to the Republican Party. The Democratic Party should not be the Leftover Party, whose Candidates are voted for when people decide they have no choice but to Vote Against Republicans.

How am I voting? I'm voting Bush out of office, whatever it takes. His foreign policy is an utter disaster, and we will be reaping the consequences if his policies 20 years from now, just as today we are reaping the consequences of the Reagan Adminsitration's policies. Our government policies created Saddam and the Taliban. Let us not forget it. Bush is breaking the back of the American Economy; our deficit is so huge that our grandchildren will still be paying for the past 4 years when they are old...do we want another 4 years of this crap so our great-grandchildren will be indebted well? How many generations will be consigned to indentured servitude to pay for the mistakes of the prior generations? How can a member of a Party that advocates SMALL GOVERNMENT and FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY do this? And how much longer are other Countries going to lend us money to pay for our deficit spending?

Vote Bush out of office. Please, by all the Gods, get him out of there.
