Dilettante's Diary: the internal dialogue of a hedonist bluestocking.

I am a dilettante. I know quite a bit about a lot of things, but I don't know enough to be an expert on anything. I have a very sensual, hedonistic nature, but I am also a thinker, and I aim one day to be worthy of the label 'bluestocking', despite its pejorative connotations.

This is my journal, which, delightfully enough, doesn't have to go wherever I go, but is accessible from nearly everywhere I am.

Daily OM

I have been enjoying the Daily OM website and email (http://www.dailyom.com/). Some of it is mystical mumbo-jumbo, but at least once a week there is something in it that I really enjoy. This week has been hell at work, so I'm really looking forward to the long weekend. It won't be much of a break though, because Stephanie and I will be driving up to Bellingham to do some work at her mom's place. We will be setting up a greenhouse and installing the trellis fence, and most likely planting roses to separate her property from her neighbors.

I was looking for 'good news' online, but there doesn't appear to be any. Today's news is full of stories about the conflict in Chechnya, where rebels there took an entire school hostage and the resulting fire-fight killed or injured many children. There is the story of the French law banning head scarves in school and the Iraqi's who took two French journalists hostage as a protest. Iran is planning to process Uranium. A fire in a German library damaged thousands of rare books. On the national front in the US, people are preparing for another hurricane, a US army reservist is convicted of abuse of prisoners at Camp Whitehorse in Iraq. So many protesters at the GOP convention in NY were arrested that many of them were held for over 3 days a,d na judge started fining the city $1000 for each person held after a certain time.

And people wonder why I don't read the newspaper or watch the news. Its a good thing I've got the Daily OM to give me something upbeat read.
