Dilettante's Diary: the internal dialogue of a hedonist bluestocking.

I am a dilettante. I know quite a bit about a lot of things, but I don't know enough to be an expert on anything. I have a very sensual, hedonistic nature, but I am also a thinker, and I aim one day to be worthy of the label 'bluestocking', despite its pejorative connotations.

This is my journal, which, delightfully enough, doesn't have to go wherever I go, but is accessible from nearly everywhere I am.

Independance Day + book fetish

Independance Day. Last full night's sleep was Saturday, I skipped Sunday. I did nap though.

Today I have freed myself of 5 out of the 12 boxes of books I pulled out of storage. I am conquering my fetish, one book at a time. I pulled nearly all of the computer books off of my shelves and packed them up to go to Powells. I'm not doing much in the way of programming anymore, and I don't have a UNIX machine anymore, and I don't think I've touched any of them since I moved them here a year ago. So, two more banker's boxes filled, and about 10 board-feet of shelf-space freed. I soon filled that though, with books from storage. I was very excited to pull out Plato and Aristophanes and Lucretius--all the greek and roman classics that may or may not experience dramatic revisions as a result of the MSI on the papyri from Herculaneum and Oxyrhynchus. I tried to give up my old textbooks on recombinant DNA and molecular bio, but I'm just no ready yet. Ditto all the history of science books.

I was surprised to realize how much political material I have: from feminist treatises to race relations to analyses of supreme court decisions to collected letters and biographies of political figures like Teddy Roosevelt, FDR, JFK, Truman, etc. And since when did I amass such a collection on Einstein and da Vinci? Mythology, world, religions, philosophy, psychology, even some occult materials. The fiction is mostly sci-fi and fantasy, I noticed. I am so excited to finally be able to re-read The Man Who Never Missed series--I found all 8 books. Yes! I was not able to let go of much of the sci-fi, even the pulp-paperback stuff. I re-read so much of it and I know from past experience that I'd just go out and buy it again.

Off to catch the fireworks at Meldrum Bar. Nice that its in my back yard, practically. I can hear the live band. Now, where is the wine?

Okay, I am somewhat envious of the book collection. It seems that I move more and more into the fiction genre with every passing day. Got anything on Hoyt Collier? It seems there is very little written about him.
