Dilettante's Diary: the internal dialogue of a hedonist bluestocking.

I am a dilettante. I know quite a bit about a lot of things, but I don't know enough to be an expert on anything. I have a very sensual, hedonistic nature, but I am also a thinker, and I aim one day to be worthy of the label 'bluestocking', despite its pejorative connotations.

This is my journal, which, delightfully enough, doesn't have to go wherever I go, but is accessible from nearly everywhere I am.

Oregon Coast

The past few weeks have been a whirlwind.

We moved in stages over a two week period. We tried to keep things organized (we numbered rooms and numbered boxes so we knew where things went) but as the apartment filled up chaos crept in. Just when things reached critical mass, it was time to go to the coast. Stephanie's step-father and his children come for three weeks in July to get the Alaskan chill from their bones.

We spent 10 days at the coast, part of it in a cottage, part of it camping.
The weather was sunny and warm, we only had rain on two evenings, and by
morning it stopped. Our tent was only big enough for two, so Evelyn slept
outside. She has hot flashes so she said she would be too warm in the tent. Of course, it rained one of the nights she slept outside. I wish I had a camera with me to photograph the sight of Evelyn in her cot with a blue tarp draped over her and her head poking out. Very funny.

We got in last night about 7pm and are feeling a bit overwhelmed with everything that still needs to be done. Ah well. Zoe seems to like the new digs---more room to galump around in. It is nice to have a washer and dryer, and we are hoping to keep up with the laundry. Most of my plants seem to be doing ok, a little heat-stressed, but otherwise ok. One day when we were moving in it was so hot we went to the pool and on the way walking there we saw a four-part wooden screen leaning against a
dumpster. Someone was moving and threw a lot of stuff away. We nabbed it and
brought it home. The thing weighs about 60# but it is very nice. We set it
up against a wall in the living room and put the buddha on a pedestal
before it, the beginnings of an altar. We found an oriental carpet with nice wine-red tones. We have a lot of cherry-toned furniture and picture frames, so it looks good.
