Dilettante's Diary: the internal dialogue of a hedonist bluestocking.

I am a dilettante. I know quite a bit about a lot of things, but I don't know enough to be an expert on anything. I have a very sensual, hedonistic nature, but I am also a thinker, and I aim one day to be worthy of the label 'bluestocking', despite its pejorative connotations.

This is my journal, which, delightfully enough, doesn't have to go wherever I go, but is accessible from nearly everywhere I am.

Alternate approach to life

Chris sent me an email after a long conversation about life and taking chances and how I'm in a place right now where everything seems so uncertain and I feel stressed by it. What he wrote really made sense. I'm putting it here so I can keep it and re-read it when I need a reminder.

There is only one thing I am certain of in life, and that is risk equals reward. I believe that with all of my heart. It may not be a conscious decision that we make when we step out on the ledge of life, but subconsciously our choice is clear.

It is like the four seasons, the sun rising and setting, how plants know to lean toward the sun, why the salmon swim upstream...you get only as much as you give in life. Give more...get more. However, there is a caveat. Be carefree, but careful. Be crazy, but crazy like a fox. And always follow the writer's (and reporter's) credo: if your mother says she loves you...check it out.

In other words, take little at face value. Do not assume, find out the truth even about those things that others say we should take for granted. Finally, do not prepare. You cannot. Play it as it lays. It is more fun that way. There are my keys to an angst-free, satisfying life. Any questions?
